I came across this plant growing in a wall by St Davids Cathedral, Pembrokeshire, Wales.

I had seen green ones before, but never one this bright colour. I discovered that if the navelwort grows in a sunny position it can turn red in the sunlight.

The name navelwort is a reference to the shape of the leaves, in the center is a navel-like depression.

The colours I used to paint this where alizarin crimson, permanent rose, permanent magenta, quinacridone magenta and permanent mauve.

Sarah Wood SBAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08466014557719227196noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3538824446648095229.post-41927077671934689812021-01-23T16:03:00.000+00:002021-01-23T16:03:17.212+00:00Latest watercolour painting Saltmarsh Goosefoot

The Saltmarsh Goosefoot is a fascinating small plant. I felt it had no impact, but was not sure what was wrong. I was going to throw the painting away, but decided to put it out of sight until I could decide why it didn't work.

I got it out a couple of months later and realised that I needed more contrast between light and dark. This week I launched a new book called

Watercolour Secrets: Raindrops.

It's the first in a series of books that I am planning on the techniques I use for my particular brand of botanical art.

How do you paint a raindrop? I will show you how.

I guide you through a step-by-step demonstration of a simple individual raindrop, followed by more detailed raindrop paintings.

The day was very wet and gloomy, but the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours 207th exhibition added the missing sunshine. The exhibition is open until Thursday 18th April.

Mike and I went to see it, travelling to London by train for the day. It is always a good exhibition but this year had an added wow factor. Such a diverse range of paintings in watercolours.
Every wall was covered in unusual concepts and compositions, from very traditional realistic paintings to modern abstract images. From the gentlest delicate paintings to images abounding in rich colour.

The exhibition was opened by Anthony J Lester, art critic and broadcaster, and Rosa Sepple the president of the RI, who both made interesting and informative speeches.

Sitting on the train on the way home I reflected on how amazing watercolour can be when so many different styles and effects can be achieved. An inspiring afternoon.

A new venture for the SBA this year. We have an exhibition as part of the Woburn Abbey Garden Show. Gates open at 10 AM this Saturday, 23 June and the event runs until Sunday. I have originals, prints and cards for sale. Come along and see what promises to be a fascinating show. If you want to say hello, I'll be stewarding on Sunday. At other times you might find me out amongst the plants.Sarah Wood SBAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08466014557719227196noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3538824446648095229.post-51110274145345364132018-04-22T20:46:00.000+01:002018-04-22T20:46:40.985+01:00Rhododendron moupinense and Ladybird

Some of the painting stages of 'Rhododendron Moupinense and Ladybird'. I love painting raindrops and thought that they looked particularly beautiful on the leaves of the Rhododendron Moupinense. I thought a pencil background would help to make a highlight of one branch of leaves. The ladybird was just a bit of fun and a splash of colour to the composition.
